I Love Canon, But Autofocus Anamorphic Is the One Look I Wish RF Made Easier

The short version

I love Canon and I’m not looking to switch systems.

This post is really about one specific gap that I wish was easier on RF right now: native autofocus anamorphic lenses.

I’m interested in anamorphic for the same reason people fall in love with certain colour grades, focal lengths, or editing styles. It can become part of your signature. I’ve experimented with trying to fake character in post, and even played with an “anamorfake” test using generative AI, but it only really works in perfect conditions. I want to make more in-camera decisions, commit to an image, and use post to finish, not manufacture the lens behaviour afterwards.

Autofocus matters here because I shoot real movement and I often work solo. On shoots like that, focus is not a creative afterthought. It is a constant risk. If autofocus can raise your hit rate while you keep moving, it buys you time, budget, and headspace for what actually shows on screen.

Sony has had a head start with third party lens development on E-mount, and Canon RF has been more controlled for longer. The good news is licensing has started to open up, which should improve choice over time. But in the meantime, Canon shooters still have workable routes.

So I’m going to break down:

  • why autofocus anamorphic has landed elsewhere first

  • what Canon shooters can do instead, from true manual anamorphic to LiDAR-driven autofocus-like setups

  • how I think about keeping a consistent look across the C70, R5 C, and R6



Definitions (quick and simple)

  • Anamorphic vs spherical: Anamorphic lenses squeeze the image in-camera and are de-squeezed later, with distinctive character. Spherical lenses capture the image without squeeze.

  • Letterbox vs anamorphic: Black bars are letterboxing (an aspect ratio choice). Anamorphic is created by the lens squeeze and de-squeeze process.

  • Native AF vs LiDAR-driven AF: Native autofocus is controlled by the camera and the lens together. LiDAR-driven autofocus uses distance measurement to drive a motor that turns a manual focus ring.



My Canon Setup

For context, I’m Matt Cowley. I shoot video, photo, and drone content, and most of my work sits in that space between cinematic quality and run and gun pace. I’m not writing this as someone who owns one body and shoots one kind of job.

My Canon setup covers a few worlds:

  • Canon R6: run and gun hybrid days where you might shoot both photo and video, keep moving, and adapt.

  • Canon C70: cinema-focused work where the priority is the image, the process, and a more deliberate pace.

  • Canon R5 C (when I have access to it): that in-between space where you can shoot like a hybrid camera but also step into a more cinema-style interface.


And I’ve got a host of photography lenses to choose from, but no cinema glass or anamorphic yet. And that’s where the curiosity started.

Because I can create a signature look in post, but there’s something appealing about a lens that bakes character into the image while still letting me move fast, especially if autofocus is part of the deal.



A signature look isn’t just colour grading

Colour grading matters, but it is only one layer.

If you want a quick example, think Michael Bay versus Wes Anderson. Even if you muted the dialogue and stripped the colour grade back, you would still feel the difference. One leans into pace, scale, movement, and impact. The other leans into framing, symmetry, rhythm, and a very controlled visual world.

When you watch someone’s work and you can tell it’s theirs, it usually comes from repeatable decisions made long before the grade.

Things like:

  • what focal lengths they lean into

  • how close they get to subjects

  • how they shape backgrounds

  • how they move the camera (or don’t)

  • how they light

  • what kind of lens character they enjoy




That’s why I’m interested in anamorphic in the first place.

After seeing lenses like the Helios 44-2 that everyone on YouTube seems to have tried, I’ve even had a go at doing my own digital edit to add more character and a bit of swirl towards the edges.

But I want to start making more in-camera decisions. Committing to an image, and then going into post to finish the shots with some colour correction and grading, not trying to bolt on fake bokeh, swirl, distortion, halation, and everything else after the fact.


I even tried my own version of an “Anamorphic” or “Anamorfake” look. It was only really possible with a static shot, using generative AI to expand the sides. It was a fun experiment, but it made the point even clearer for me. If I like movement and this had to be done on a clean, static shot, then the whole video wouldn’t fit what I really wanted. I want the character to come from the lens and the decisions made on set, not from tricks that only work in very specific conditions. Anamorphic can add a layer of character that you can feel across a whole set of deliverables.

And personally, I already like compression. I like what longer focal lengths do to a scene, how they separate subject from background, and how they make images feel intentional.

I also love movement, especially when you can create a bit of parallax. Even a simple move can add depth and energy, without making it feel flashy for the sake of it.

If you combine compression with anamorphic character, that’s a very interesting lane.



Why autofocus anamorphic matters, especially when people move

A lot of the work that pulled me into this industry was fitness content. People move fast. They change direction. They step in and out of light. You anticipate a moment, and it happens half a second earlier than you expected.

On shoots like that, focus is not a creative afterthought. It is a constant risk.

Now, I get the argument for manual focus. There are plenty of situations where manual focus still trumps autofocus, and I use it for those exact reasons.


Where manual focus wins:

  • When you want intentional focus pulls between subjects.

  • When you have things crossing the frame and you do not want the camera hunting.

  • When you are building a specific focus rhythm into the shot.


But when those variables are not there, when nothing is moving in front of the lens, when you are not jumping between subjects, and you simply need to keep the talent sharp while you focus on framing and movement, I do not think “harder” automatically means “better”.

Nobody watches a finished piece and praises the fact it stayed in focus. They feel the moment, the energy, the framing, the pacing, the story. Focus is the baseline requirement, not the creative flex.


That’s why autofocus matters to me. It does not remove creativity. It gives you more possibilities, because it frees up brain space for the things that actually show on screen. And it can save time, which saves money.


Even if autofocus turns an average of three takes into two takes, that adds up quickly. Multiply that across a day where you might shoot ten short scenes, and each take needs a reset, a quick prep, and a bit of “ready to roll”. You can easily buy yourself a meaningful chunk of time on set.

Sometimes that time saving is just convenience. Sometimes it is the difference between getting the shot and not getting it. And sometimes it is literally budget. If a shot involves materials, pouring drinks, breaking glass, product resets, or anything that costs money per attempt, it is obviously better to need fewer attempts. At the extreme end, if you have one chance at something big, you want it framed right and in focus. Nailing focus is not the style. It is the ticket that lets the style happen.


There are also people who can do everything at once, and more power to you. Operating, moving, framing, pulling focus, watching levels, managing a heavier setup, that is a proper skill, and you should charge properly for it.


But on smaller budgets, the reality is you do not always have a focus puller, a dedicated sound person, or a bigger crew. So the question becomes: what gives you the best chance of walking away with great footage, without turning every shot into a stress test?


Look at photography. Autofocus lenses are the norm because they expand what you can capture. Manual focus is still there when you want it. It is the same idea here.


For me, this also links to where I want to take my work next. Outdoor and adventure content has movement built into it. Weather changes. Light changes. People move. You are often carrying everything yourself. A compact setup with a couple of focal lengths that have real character, where autofocus is available when you need it, that is genuinely exciting. And if the camera can also shoot stills, it means your photo and video output can share the same baseline look. Most photos are still taken on clean photography glass. Anamorphic would feel different. That difference could become part of the style.


Some professionals will read this and think it sounds lazy. Fair enough. But I see it more like choice. Do you wash your own car, or take it to a car wash? Some do, some do not.

Do you build every grade from scratch, or do you start with a Rec.709 conversion and then shape it? Some do, some do not.


There are a lot of places in this industry where you can choose the harder route or the easier route. Sometimes harder is better. Sometimes easier is simply smarter. The goal is the result, and the ability to deliver it reliably.



The real reason I want it: a tighter solo setup

This is the bit that really matters to me as a solo operator.

A tighter setup is not just nicer to carry. It’s faster to work with, easier to trust, and less likely to throw you a problem mid-shoot. The moment you start adding rods, motors, extra power, extra cables, and calibration steps, you are not just adding capability, you are adding points of failure.

That’s not a dig at focus assist systems. They are brilliant when a job calls for them. It’s just that the dream with autofocus anamorphic is simple: the look and the usability live in the same place.

Lens on camera, go shoot.


On a typical day, a lean setup buys you:

  • quicker setup and quicker resets

  • fewer things to troubleshoot

  • less time balancing and rebalancing

  • less mental load while you’re trying to direct, frame, move, and keep the energy up


Cost plays a part too. A proper focus assist setup can easily land in the same price bracket as another lens. If it genuinely expands what you can shoot, fair enough. But if you are only buying it to make a certain look usable, it starts to feel like the wrong kind of compromise.

That’s why autofocus anamorphic is so appealing. It is not about skipping skills. It is about keeping the rig lean, keeping the pace up, and giving yourself more chances to nail the moment.



So why does Sony have autofocus anamorphic options and Canon doesn’t?

If we keep it simple, I think this comes down to one main difference.

Sony opened E-mount to third parties early through a published specifications and licence process. Canon kept RF more tightly controlled for longer.

Sony publicly disclosed the basic E-mount specifications back in 2011, with a licensing process that allowed third-party manufacturers to develop lenses and adapters for the mount. That early openness is a big part of why E-mount built such a massive third-party lens catalogue over time.

And once that ecosystem exists, it becomes the obvious place for manufacturers to try the more complex stuff first. Autofocus anamorphic is not just glass. It’s glass, electronics, autofocus tuning, firmware behaviour, and ongoing support across camera bodies.



With Sony, the long-established players like Sigma, Tamron, and Zeiss have licensed E-mount protocols, so their lenses tend to behave consistently, even as new bodies and firmware updates arrive. On the other side of it, you still see compatibility issues with some third-party lenses when manufacturers are effectively reverse-engineering rather than licensing. That’s the trade-off of having a wide-open lens landscape. The ecosystem is huge, but it’s not always uniform.


Canon RF has been the opposite experience. RF launched in 2018, and for years Canon did not license the mount for fully supported autofocus lenses, even going as far as pushing back on reverse-engineered autofocus RF lenses. Only in 2024 did we start to see official, licensed third-party autofocus lenses from major manufacturers, and even then it began with APS-C options.

So, is this just because RF is newer? Partly, yes. A newer mount always takes time to build up depth. But it’s not a simple “waiting period” thing. The bigger factor is that Sony chose to open up early, while Canon chose to protect and control the system for longer.


And that has a knock-on effect.

If you’re a manufacturer making a niche product like an autofocus anamorphic lens, you’re going to launch where you already have the most support, the biggest user base, and the lowest risk of compatibility drama. Right now, that still tends to be Sony E-mount first, with other mounts following later.


And if you think about timelines, it starts to make sense why it feels lopsided. Sony began opening E-mount to third parties back in 2011. That means lens makers have had roughly fifteen years to iterate, refine, and build confidence in that ecosystem. Canon RF only arrived in 2018, and licensed third party autofocus lenses only really started showing up from 2024 onwards. Even if everyone moves quickly, this stuff is not instant. Designing optics is hard enough. Building dependable autofocus behaviour, keeping it stable across multiple camera bodies and firmware updates, and supporting it long-term is a different level of effort.

The positive spin is that licensing is a step in the right direction. More options for Canon shooters means more competition, and competition is what forces everyone to improve. If third party lenses keep arriving for RF, it should push innovation on both sides: it raises the bar for Canon’s own lenses, and it gives creators more choice to build the look and workflow that suits their work.


I also think it benefits autofocus anamorphic as a whole. The more people who can actually use it, the more people buy into it, and the feedback loop drives development faster. It’s a cycle. It still feels like it’s in its infancy, but it could become something genuinely cool over the next few years.



What Canon shooters can do instead

I think it helps to split this into two buckets.

First, the options that are definitely anamorphic, where the lens is doing the thing.

Then the options that either help you get autofocus with manual anamorphic, or give you some anamorphic flavour while you work out whether it fits your workflow.


1) The obvious starting point: buy an anamorphic lens and shoot it manually

If you want a true anamorphic look, this is the baseline.

Manual anamorphic on Canon means you can choose the character you actually want: squeeze factor, focal lengths, close focus behaviour, how strong the flares are, and how clean or messy the lens feels.

At that point it becomes a preference and budget decision.

The trade-off is simply that you’re committing to manual focus, which can be perfect on controlled shoots, and harder when the subject is moving unpredictably.


2) If you definitely want autofocus with anamorphic on Canon, there are workarounds

This is where LiDAR systems earn their keep.

They do not magically turn a manual lens into a native autofocus lens. What they do is measure distance to the subject and then drive a focus motor that physically turns the focus ring for you.

In other words, it is autofocus behaviour layered on top of a manual lens.


  • Best use cases: solo run and gun, gimbal work, documentary-style shooting, fitness content, outdoor and adventure where you need to keep moving.

  • You calibrate the lens once so the system understands the focus travel.

  • The LiDAR reads distance and the motor turns the focus ring to match.

  • In practice, it can feel like autofocus on a manual lens, especially for run and gun work where you want to keep attention on framing and movement.


  • Best use cases: smaller rigs where you want autofocus-like behaviour on manual lenses without going full cinema build, social-first filming days, solo operator shoots where you want help staying sharp.

  • Similar idea, but built as a LiDAR-assisted autofocus motor system.

  • You calibrate the lens, then the motor uses LiDAR distance measurement to drive focus automatically.

  • It is designed to reduce the difficulty of focusing so you can concentrate on composition.


Option C: Focus assist rather than autofocus (rangefinder systems like Cine RT)

  • Best use cases: controlled brand films, product work, interviews, narrative, or any shoot where you want the feel of manual focus but you want to reduce missed takes.

  • This is not autofocus, but it can significantly improve your hit rate.

  • It gives you reliable distance data and focus marks so manual focusing becomes less of a guessing game.

  • This makes more sense when you want manual control but you still want help staying consistent.

All of these options are worth seeing as tools, not as a replacement for native autofocus. They can be brilliant, but they also add cost, setup time, and a bit more kit to the rig.


3) If you want autofocus and an anamorphic vibe, but you’re not ready to go all in yet

This is the low-risk testing lane.

You can add some of the language of anamorphic without buying an anamorphic lens straight away.

In camera flavour

  • Wider framing: one of the most common “anamorphic tells” people notice without realising is simply a wider frame. You can shoot and finish in a wider aspect ratio, which is where the black bars come from. That part is not anamorphic by itself, but it cues the brain into “cinema”.

  • Streaky flares: anamorphic flares are a big part of the vibe. You can lean into practical light sources and use in-camera options like streak filters if you want that look baked in.

  • Bloom and softness: diffusion can add a more film-like bloom around highlights, which often pairs well with a wider frame.

  • Compression and movement: longer focal lengths, intentional backgrounds, and a bit of parallax can do a lot of heavy lifting even without true anamorphic glass.

In post (for testing, not as the final identity) You can add letterboxing, flare plugins, and subtle distortion, but it’s worth saying it out loud.

It can fall apart quickly once the shot is moving, once the background gets busy, or once the lighting is unpredictable.

I’ve tested this myself with an “anamorfake” approach using generative AI to expand the sides. Fun experiment, but it reinforced the point: I want character to come from the lens and the decisions made on set, not tricks that only work in perfect conditions.

A simple way to choose

  • If you want true anamorphic character, start with manual anamorphic.

  • If you want true anamorphic character and you need help keeping subjects sharp, look at LiDAR autofocus options.

  • If you’re not sure it fits your workflow yet, build a wider-frame, flare-friendly look first, then decide whether it is worth committing to true anamorphic glass.



My “Compression + Character” look packages (C70, R5 C, R6)

This is how I think about keeping a consistent feel across different bodies and different types of shoot, without pretending they all behave the same.

I also think this matters when you start talking about anamorphic. Many anamorphic lenses are less clinically sharp than comparable spherical photo lenses, and edge sharpness can fall off more too, although modern designs vary. That can be part of the magic, but it also changes how forgiving a setup feels when you are trying to nail focus.


Package A: Cinema first (C70)

Goal: controlled, crafted image where character leads.

I absolutely love the C70. The colours, dynamic range, and highlight roll-off are just beautiful. Shooting in CLog2 with a Rec.709 conversion straight into the edit suite already looks aesthetic.

It’s also a cinema camera built around a Super 35 sensor, internal NDs, and a workflow that suits video-first jobs.

Where I’m curious (and slightly cautious) is how it pairs with anamorphic, especially if you lean into softer glass. I have not used anamorphic on the C70 yet, but if you combine a softer lens with a sensor and image pipeline that is not trying to look overly crisp, it can become easier to think you have nailed focus when you are actually a touch off.

For static or controlled shots, that’s not a problem. You can take your time, zoom in, check, set marks, and move on.


For fast movement, I’ve personally found it harder to nail focus on the C70 compared with the hybrid bodies. That’s not a knock on the camera. It’s just a different tool with a different feel.

If I wanted true anamorphic character to be a core ingredient, the C70 feels like the most natural home for it, but it might also be the camera where a LiDAR system makes the most sense if the shoot pace is high.

Package B: Hybrid cinema (R5 C)

Goal: cinematic look with flexibility when the day changes pace.

The R5 C is an incredible, capable camera. I love it for the extra megapixels when it comes to photos, and the image can be very crisp.


That crispness is actually why it could pair beautifully with softer, character-led lenses. A lot of people do these see-saw combos on purpose: sharp sensor plus softer lens, or sharp sensor plus diffusion, because otherwise everything can feel too crisp and too clinical.


The big practical downside is power. Battery life definitely affects this camera compared to the R6. If you want to use it properly for video, I’d recommend some kind of external power solution, otherwise you can chew through batteries very quickly.


This is also the body where the idea of autofocus anamorphic feels the most exciting, because it would let you carry a consistent look across both video and photo work, without building a heavy rig by default.

Package C: Run and gun hybrid (R6)

Goal: reliability and speed while still pushing a consistent signature.

The R6 is incredible for the size and price. It’s the camera that first allowed me to get into proper professional work for both video and photo.

To show how compact it can be, I have run a Canon R6 with an EF to RF adapter and a Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 on a DJI RS3 Mini. Most of the weight in that little setup is the lens.

If I want a tight setup, strong autofocus, and the ability to keep moving, the R6 is the easy grab.

This is where my approach becomes simple:

  • keep the setup lean

  • lean into compression when it suits the scene

  • keep backgrounds intentional

  • move with purpose to create parallax, without making it flashy

  • grade to support the choices made in camera, not replace them


When I choose between cameras (or bring multiple)

If it is purely video, I reach for the C70 because it’s beautiful. But if the subject is moving fast, and I need the highest hit rate on focus, that can tip the balance towards the R5 C or R6.

If I need photos as well, the R5 C shines with the higher megapixels. But if it’s outdoors, I definitely feel more comfortable with the R6’s weather sealing compared with the R5 C’s vented design.



How I decide on a shoot day

If you’re trying to choose between these routes, here’s a simple checklist.

  • Is the subject moving unpredictably?

  • Can we repeat takes, or is it one-take moments?

  • Am I solo operating?

  • Is speed or character the priority today?

  • Is this mainly video, or hybrid photo and video?

A simple way to map it:

  • Speed and hit rate matter most: Route 2 or Route 3

  • Character and control matter most: Route 1


When I choose autofocus vs manual

This is where I tend to draw the line.

I’ll choose manual focus when:

  • the shot is static and I know there’s a specific point in the frame I want nailed

  • I want a smooth push or pull from one part of the frame to another

  • it’s an interview and I do not want the camera randomly deciding to shift focus

  • there will be lots of things moving in the frame and I do not want focus hunting

  • lighting could get challenging (very low light, flashing light, and other conditions that can confuse autofocus)

I’ll choose autofocus when:

  • the subject is moving unpredictably and I need to prioritise framing and timing

  • the pace is high and I cannot afford repeated takes for focus misses

  • I’m on a gimbal or moving handheld and I want the option to keep the talent sharp while I move



My take: why I still shoot Canon

Canon has been there for every stage of this journey.

My dad gave me my first camera and it was a Canon. When I started shooting content for my fitness Instagram as a personal trainer, it was Canon. When I bought my first camera for professional work, Canon again. And when I bought my first cinema camera, it was Canon too.

So this is not a post about leaving.


I love Canon. I know the system, and I want to master the Canon ecosystem properly.

Part of that, for me, is exploring lens choices that add intentional character and bake it into the image. You make the choice, and then you make it work. That is where a lot of the craft lives.

I also think we are heading into a world where “fix it in post” will be far too easy. AI will let you change almost anything about an image or a video with a prompt.


What will stay special is what you can capture in the moment, for yourself and for a client. Real decisions, real light, real movement, real timing. That is the stuff that holds value long after the trends move on.



Conclusion: why this stuff matters

All of this lens talk can sound a bit niche, but it is part of what is happening behind the scenes whenever content is made professionally.

Either you decide there is a look you want to be known for, and your brand buys into it, or you work with someone to build that look for your brand. In that case, you almost reverse engineer it.

Your brand is X. How do we portray X in an image or a video? What framing choices help? What lighting choices help? What lens choices help? How do we shoot it so it feels consistent, not random?


That is why hiring a professional can still matter.

Phones are getting so good that if you do not care about how it looks, the vibe it portrays, or the outcome that creates, you might as well use your phone and capture for capture’s sake.

But if you want something intentional, something that feels like it belongs together, and something that carries a recognisable signature across a whole package of deliverables, then these decisions matter.


Budgets are tighter. Teams are smaller. Turnarounds are faster. A lot of shoots now need video, photo, and sometimes vertical content too, often with one person carrying the whole thing.

That is where I think autofocus anamorphic could become genuinely exciting. It has the potential to give solo shooters more creative options, with less time and budget, while keeping the setup lean enough to keep moving.

Can you adapt Sony autofocus anamorphic lenses to Canon RF?
